those of you looking to arrange your daughter's wedding, she hasn't found a groom yet and you're starting to panic ... www.simplymarry.com
the coloured ad says .... "drop social pre-conditions like caste, religion, or dowry requirements from your matrimonial ad, and we snip 15% off the rates. So what are you waiting for? Progressive thinking always pays right?" .. PROGRESSIVE THINKING???? THESE ARE PARENTS, ADVERTISING/MATCH MAKING FOR A MATE FOR THEIR GROWN UP CHILD ..... PROGRESSIVE THINKING INDEEDYDO!!!!!
I know darling ... when we advertise for a bride for our son, let's aim high shall we?
this is the one redeeming quality you thought would attract a mate for your son? I guess honesty IS the best policy
and finally:
I got redirected to your blog from another one that I read. Most of it makes interesting reading. Just a reminder though that you are living in a different country and culture.
ReplyDeleteIt is common for Indian parents to look for a bride/groom for their children and many (not all) children are also comfortable with the arrangement. Agree that many of the advertisements make interesting reading and can also sound ridiculous to someone not familiar with the culture. However, the match making works quite well for an Indian family.
I would also like to point out that to an Indian many of the western ways appear absolutely ridiculous - the culture of girls (young, old, older) and boys dressing provocatively and hanging out in a pub (while drenched with alcohol) with the purpose of finding a partner either for the night or longer is unthinkable.
I'm not trying to rule that one way is better than the other. Just as you've said that your blogs should not be taken out of context, you should try and understand the culture and the people of the country you're living in before commenting.
... if only you knew me!
